Mokume-gane & Sterling Silver Fusion 4-Piece Buckle Set
The unique, hand-crafted Fusion - Charleston 4-piece buckle set is part of Neil's Fusion Series for the obvious fusing of metals, but also for the more subtle fusion of East and West, classic and traditional, complex and elegant. Neil hand-crafted each of these buckles (and sets) from metal plate, bar, and wire - and each is uniquely sculpted. The Fusion - Charleston belt buckle set is true wearable art, and makes a great gift for graduation, retirement, and more.
The Fusion - Charleston is an unusual ranger set made from several metals: sterling silver & mokume-gane with a 14K gold quail. Mokume-gane (Japanese for "wood grained metals") is a type of Japanese married metal made from diffusion bonded laminates often used in decorating swords, in this case consisting of nickel silver, brass, and copper. The buckle is cut from one solid piece of Mokume-gane, and the waves in the metal continue on the sides of the buckle creating an interesting pattern (see angled photo). The delicate quail appointment is 14K gold.
The Fusion - Charleston is completely handcrafted, and made up as he went. As the artist he is, Neil often entertains himself experimenting like this. The surface of the buckle was acid-etched creating a beautiful, wood-grain-like texture and bringing out the subtle colors in the combined metals. It was also heat-treated for an unusual patina. This fun buckle set shows character and individuality and looks great on any color ranger strap.

About The Fusion Series
Fusion Series
Neil has always enjoyed combining different metals in his buckles, and has recently gone “all-the-way” with his fusion of styles, materials, influences, inspirations, and aspirations. This series of unique, hand-crafted buckles (and some sets) is inspired from aesthetics as varied as Japanese and Scandinavian to Western and South-West Indian designs.
The mosaics of this fusion of metals is especially intriguing as Neil incorporates not only Mokume-gane, which itself is a married metal, he then adds sterling silver and sometimes brass, gold, and shakudo. Mokume-gane is Japanese for “wood grained metals”, which is a metal made from diffusion bonded laminates. Shakudo is a Japanese alloy formulated for a special patina. Both of these Japanese metals are commonly used in decorating swords.
We called them The Fusion Series because of the obvious fusing of metals, but also for the more subtle fusion of East and West, classic and traditional, complex and elegant. Neil hand-crafted each of these pieces from metal plate, bar, and wire – and each is uniquely sculpted. They are true wearable art, and make great gifts for retirement, graduation, and more.
