Close-Up of Buckle | Close-Up of Buffalo Face
This trophy-style belt buckle commemorates Jim's trip to the Charara Valley of Zimbabwe. He wanted a cape buffalo with a fierce, aloof look, and I think Neil succeded in that. The buffalo is mostly brought out by drawing techniques, with a little bit of relief. Most animals in engraving are done in bolino, but in this case Neil leaned on his drawing skills. The Euro scroll on the bottom is darker and heavier, nicely anchored with the large leaf-spathe at the base. This also plays a little with the curvature of the horns. The leafy scroll at the top is much lighter and almost floats in the sky. The checkering on the sides is very nicely done and adds a frame of sorts. Jim's name is intentionally hidden in the grass above the right horn. (I blurred out his last name in the photos.)
The buffalo and the plate are solid 18K gold overlay, while the partial outline around the buffalo is 24K line-inlay. There is also a small section of 24K gold on the edge of the tip of the left horn, to bring out a slight reflection of light. Neil used brass, copper, and pure silver (.999) inlay for a fine touch of life-like light in his eyes.
