Close-Up of Belt Buckle | Angled Close-Up of Belt Buckle
This hand engraved buckle is a fun version of our River Trophy, which Neil also engraved for casting the 2007 Annual Edition Yellowstone Buckle. It has a sheet of Mokume-gane across the face.
Mokume gane (Japanese for "wood grained metals") is a type of Japanese married metal made from diffusion bonded laminates often used in decorating swords, in this case made with layers of silver and copper. It is usually worked from the back to produce valleys and ridges on the front, which are filed and sanded to reveal a unique design. A specially formulated chemical treatment leaves a rich patina, highlighting the character of the metal's design. There is risk and discovery in making each piece.
The trout is 24K raised inlay, sculpted and carved to appear 3-dimensional. The way the pattern of the Mokume-gane worked out, the trout seems to be rising in the current, as the colors are lighter to the right of him, and darker to the left, - he is "breaking" the water. The top and bottom borders are also divided into left and right adding to that feeling. The strong, almost rigid pattern in the leaf-scrolls stands in stark contrast to the fluid feel of the Mokume-gane.
This is a heavy silver trophy-style buckle with a swivel bail, allowing the buckle to lie flat. (See angled photo.) It has a 1⅛" (28mm) wide opening, and accomodates a 1" (25mm) to 1⅛" (28mm) straight belt strap or a wider tapered strap.
