Close-Up | Pendant w/Chain
Neil created this fun and unusual pendant around Christmas time 2011. He was working on a few jewelry projects, and was in the mood. It is handcrafted in Mokume-gane layered over sterling silver sheet.
Mokume gane (Japanese for "wood grained metals") is a type of Japanese married metal made from diffusion bonded laminates often used in decorating swords, in this case consisting of sterling silver, copper, shibuichi, and shakudo. It is usually worked from the back to produce valleys and ridges on the front, which are filed and sanded to reveal a unique design. A specially formulated chemical treatment leaves a rich patina, highlighting the character of the metal's design. There is risk and discovery in making each piece.
The water-lily and three lily-pads at the bottom are small silver discs soldered to the surface of the Mokume-gane. They're placed inside the circles created by the pattern in the Mokume-gane for a nice effect. They are then shaped, and, in the case of the water-lily, heavily bas-relief sculpted to give a three-dimensional impression. The dragonfly is inlaid in 24K gold and also lightly shaped to add depth.
The "Dragonfly" pendant comes with an 18" long solid sterling silver snake chain with a lobster-claw clasp.
